1952 Paul, the picture in the garage was Thanksgiving 1952. This was when Popie was finishing the house on Stop 12. Steve had a monkey that HATED women and he had to get rid of it, back to the Jones. Aunt Peg came and she and Revina got into an argurement over Joyce and the little half bath Mom had in the garage. Aunt Ida said Joyce was playing in the toilet.
The picture of a lot of people was at Garfield Park and it was the church picnic that Mom and Popie attended.

    Valarie Chasteen said the following:
This picture(#1) says a lot to me about the love and fun we shared at the cabin with grandma and grandpa. It always makes me smile. My mom reminded me last night that when grandpa bought the boat the steering cables were reversed so that when you turned the steering wheel left, it went right. We actually went out on Cataract Lake in it like that but later he had it repaired.

Chester Arthur Chasteen worked hard raising a family during the depression. He met Madie Mae Beam when he was 20 years old. His mother, Ida belle Phelps Chasteen, invited her over for a dinner with a few other church members. Chester was a religious boy, but he had back sledded to the ways of the world. He was a sinner, but after he met Madie he went to church whenever the church doors opened. Ida Belle said he got saved and quit smoking cigars. I’m Chester’s son, Paul Chester Chasteen, writing this.

Madie had married Lovell Arnold Beam in 1922. They had a son the next year named Jack Lovell Beam. Four years later on 21 Feb 1926 Lovell died of TB. She got a job at the sanitarium where Lovell was being treated to be near him. Lovell played the piano and one day he passed a church and went in. They needed a piano player so he volunteered. He told them of his illness so they prayed for his healing. He was converted and was baptized. Madie was also baptized. They attended the same church as Ida Belle. After Lovell died mom had met dad at this dinner party in 1927. They were attracted to each other and shortly thereafter they got married and on 17 June 1928 John and I arrived. Eighteen months they had a daughter named Marcene Mae Chasteen. They referred to her as a blue baby, but at the time they were afraid it could be catching so Ida Bell took the twins and didn’t give them back until they were 15 years old. Marcene lived for nine months. Years later they learned her heart did not allowed the blood to be purified.

During World War two he worked for the New York Central Railroad Repair Shops in Beech Grove Indiana. He bought three acres of land on South Emerson Avenue about one and half miles from the RR shops. As he could afford it he built three houses. The first one was later referred to as the chicken house. He raised chickens in the first house for the eggs which he sold. Mom would kill the chickens when they stopped producing and sell them. Dad dug a water well and an outside toilet. The outhouse (privy) was well equipped with a Sears and Roebuck Catalog, and it wasn’t there to look at. Every Monday mom would the laundry outside in a large cast iron tub and hang it outside to dry. Dad had a large garden and mom would can the veggies. He also worked on weekends for the Railway Express sorting boxes being mailed in boxcars. He also worked for the Barbersol shaving cream company. At the railroad he bucked rivets on the metal boxcars. That was a hot, dirty and noisy job. After the war he was allowed to quit the railroad job.

After the war he had two more sons James Rodney and Stephen Lee and a daughter named Rebecca Ann. He quit the railroad after the war ended and worked as a machine operator for International Harvester where they made truck engines. As time went by he built two more houses each bigger and better that the earlier ones. They all had inside plumbing and inside automatic washing machines and dryers. He retired from there about 1963.

As the children got married and left home things got a bit easier for dad. Rebecca got married in 1949, James in 1952 and Stephen in 1967. A few years later in 1948 he built small cabin near Counot Lake near Cloverdale, Indiana. All the grand children would spend time with him at the lake. He got a boat and a moped mainly for the grandchildren.

Chester married Madie Mae MOORE on 01 Sep 1927 in Brother Osborne's house in Indianapolis, Indiana/Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, USA. ~~~~~
(The following is from an extended interview between Chuck Griep -husband of Valarie Jean Chasteen- and Madie Mae Moore Chasteen on July 4, 1989)
PART 1: How Madie met and married Lovell Arnold Beam:
Madie and her sister Peg (Margaret) went to see Henry Johnson, a cousin in New Albany, IN. They went to Fountain Ferry park in Louisville, KY where there was music and a dance band. She danced with Lovell Arnold Beam (whose uncle was Jim Beam of whisky fame and his brother was General Roseham Beam during WW-2. He was a bird Cononel at Boca Raton, FL in 1946 ). He took the sisters back to the cousin's house in a car. Later Lovell came to Indianapolis to find Madie. He stood on the corner of Washington and Illinois Streets, hoping to see her. He didn't find her, so he looked in the phone book for her sister Ida. He called Ida who invited both him and Madie over to her house. They dated for just 6 days and then married. Madie was 17. The date was August 2, 1922. They were married at a magistrate's at the courthouse in Indianapolis, IN with Ida signing for Madie. They moved in with his mother in Louisville, KY in a house on Story Avenue. He worked for Ewing's milk company as a delivery man.

Later they moved to 1020 South 2nd Street in Louisville. On November 23, 1923, Jack Lovell Beam was born at home. Dr. Mathhews and the mother-in-law delivered the baby.

The last picture show that Madie went to see was at the Kentucky Theater in Louisville--it was "Three Weeks".

Lovell Arnold had TB and was admitted to a sanitorium. Madie got a job there. At this time Lovell had a vision of Jesus and said that he could only get well because of Jesus. They moved to Indianapolis and lived with Madie's sister Ida. Lovell slept on the porch to get more air. Lovell was going to be treated by Palmer's Chiropractic School. On his way to his first visit there, he went into an evangelist's meeting in a tabernacle. They needed a volunteer to play the piano, so he volunteered and they ended up praying for healing for him. He stayed until midnight, worrying Madie to death. They told him that he and Madie should fast and pray and then come back to the next night. Madie didn't want to go because she cussed all day (because the baby was bad "fingered the table" she had just waxed). She had never been to a Pentecostal church before. They want anyway and got saved, but he was not healed. They continued to go to church at the tabernacle.

They heard about another church at the tabernacle, Laurel Street Tabernacle. The people there had had a vision of a young couple who needed help and interpreted this to mean Lovell and Madie. They rented a cottage and furniture for them and got Madie a job. At this time Madie started growing her hair to be a real Christian. Lovell asked her never to marry anyone else. Once while going out to get some water for Lovell, Madie had heard a voice which said "I have many things to tell you, but you aren't able to bear it". Three days before Lovell died, he received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and released her from her promise not to marry again. Lovell died on Feb 21, 1925 when his son Jack was 18 months old. They buried him. Jack was put into formal daycare at $2 a week and Madie had him on weekends.

PART 2: How Madie met and married Chester Arthur Chasteen:

Chester's mother invited a group for a get together, including Madie. Chester and Madie got paired off. Chester's family went to the same church as Madie, but Chester was backslidden and didn't go to church. Madie was taking care of a mentally disturbed young girl for a rich family. After the get together, Chester started showing up at church and Wednesday prayer meeting to court Madie. Madie found out that Chester smoked - it was the last time. They were eventually married in the minister's living room by Brother Osborne on Sept 1, 1927.

    PART 3: Chester Arthur Chasteen

Chester worked for the railroad (New York Central - unionized) during World War II - he couldn't quit because of the war. He worked on a 3-man riveting gang. As soon as the war was over, he went to work for International Harvester. They voted in the union after he had been there for six months.

PART 4: The birth of John and Paul

On a Saturday, Madie went on a streetcar and bought ten gallons of pineapple to can on Sunday morning. At 5:30 A.M. on Sunday, Madie asked if Chester had kicked her in the back. Chester went out to find a telephone. He found a total stranger that had a phone and called a cab and the hospital. John Thomas was born on the way to the delivery room at 6:15 A.M. Madie held John while Paul was being born at 6:30 P.M. "Paul had a veil over his face", which meant that he would be smart.

PART 5: A visit to some cousins

Madie's mother Anna Yarbrough didn't let her kids associate with her sister's kids because they were so poor. Once Madie and Chester went to New Albany to see Mary (Yarbrough) Nail and her kids, without knowing how to find them. Madie saw a stranger and thought it was her cousin - it turned out to be George Nail. He told them where he lived. He was hauling groceries in a wagon and met them at home.

PART 6: Some proverbs of Madie's
Slower than the itch Slower than molasses in January Went sideways to keep from flying So old it was growing whiskers
As welcome as the flowers in May As fine as frog's hair Sweet one

Harrodsburg, the county seat of Mercer County, was founded in 1774 by a stalwart band of pioneers led by James Harrod, of Pennsylvania. It was the only "colonial" city and the first permanent English settlement west of the Allegheny Mountains. Referred to as the "Birthplace of the West," Harrodsburg has a proud and remarkable heritage. From here the pioneers filtered through - conquering the wilderness and going on to populate and settle the rest of the Western frontier. Harrodsburg was first the county seat of Fincastle County, Virginia then Kentucky County Virginia. When Kentucky County was divided into the counties of Fayette, Jefferson and Lincoln, Harrodsburg was the county seat of Lincoln County, which at that time covered over a third of the soon to be state. In 1785 Mercer County was taken from Lincoln and Harrodsburg has remained the county seat of Mercer County. The Kentucky territory became a state in 1792.

Rebecca Worthley wrote the following on 3 June 2010. about the period before 1958...I remember Pop Chasteen so very well. My mother (Violet Young) worked for him and helped take care of Mrs. Ida. He would go out and sit on the back porch while we cleaned the house for him on Saturdays and do his laundry. Mother would always take Sharon, Virginia and me (Rebecca) with her. Even after Mrs. Ida passed away we still did his chores for Pop. He was a good man with a big heart.. When school came around he would help purchase our clothing for school. I remember one year, he bought me a white fleece coat, black dress with beautiful round polka-dot colors of red, yellow, white, and blue in the dress and a beautiful pain of oxford shoes to wear. I felt like a million dollars when I went to Church that Sunday. Years passed and I graduated from High School and he gave me a Bolivia Watch for graduation. He passed soon after that. I went on to finish college at Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville, IN He did for all of us children the same. He would tell Daddy "My Young" I will do what I can do to help you family. They always help Me.! Mother loved Mrs. Ida. She always said that she was one of the sweetest ladies that God ever put on this earth. Mother and Daddy thought there was no one like the Peter's. *Uncle John and Aunt Lizzie", my sister Sharon stayed with "Aunt Lizzie" for years after Uncle John passed away. I am currently trying to find out if anyone knows anything about James and when he went to Sunbright. We loved James and Reba very much. Brother Thomas worked for James in the store after school. He was so helpful for the family. You sure had a nice family. You will never know how much we love and miss them. Many blessings to you.Rebecca. Young

TAP43, To: PAUL CHASTEEN, Subject: Ida Belle Phelps Hi Paul,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I was in Hawaii and then had a minor medical problem that kept me off the computer. My GG Grandfather is Henry Fulp/Felps/Phelps (1799-1860). I now have evidence that suggests he was the son of second generation, Valentine Fulps. That would make him an uncle of 3rd generation Valentine(1780-1865) who was the father of Solomon(1835-1901) who was the father of Ida Belle(1876-1954). That would make us about 4th or 5th cousins? I don't have my family "Tree" on Ancestry.com but would like to share info. I am currently researching the European ancestry of Georg Fulp, our first American ancestor. You can best reach me at my email address: taphelps@comporium.net

Rev. Dr. J.A. Sawyer, one of our m ost distinguished lecturers, has just closed one of the most successful meetings we have witnessed here for many years. His sermons and lectures were sublime and our citizens feel very grateful toward him for his very earnest work. Miss Ida Phelps, one of Milledgeville's very best young ladies, was in the meeting and did excellent work from house to house. A Methodist church was organized with a membership of 25 or more.

A Few Facts About Clark County Clark is divided into 12 Civil Townships as follows: Bethlehem, Carr, Charlestown, Jeffersonville, Monroe,
Oregon, Owen, Silver Creek, Union, Utica, Washington and Wood. Clark County was set apart February 3, 1801, by William Henry Harrison, then Governor of the Territory of Indiana.
The County Seat hasn't always been Jeffersonville. The first county seat was Springville. This was a little village, which stood near where Charlestown now stands. This village was on the old Indian trail from the Falls of the Ohio to the Indian nations of the north, west and east. Jonathan Jennings, first Governor of Indiana, lived a short distance from this little town, which was at one time a great trading center for the French and Indians, but nothing remains to tell where the village stood. On June 9, 1802, Governor Harrison issued a proclamation "fixing the seat of justice at the town of Jeffersonville ... after the first day of August next," however, the Territorial Legislature changed it to Charlestown by the Act of
December 14, 1810. On September 23, 1873, the County Seat was permanently located at Jeffersonville. Charlestown was first settled in 1808 and by 1849 (twenty-four years before the County Seat was transferred to Jeffersonville) it contained a Courthouse, Presbyterian County Seminary and Female High School, churches for the Episcopal and Reformed Methodists as well as Baptists and Presbyterians, about 200 dwelling houses and a population of 1,200. Port Fulton, now included within Jeffersonville, was home to the third-largest hospital in the United States during the Civil War. Jefferson General Hospital was built on property confiscated from U.S. Senator Jesse D. Bright, who was a Confederate sympathizer. Under the command of Dr. Middleton Goldsmith from February 21, 1864 to December of 1866, the facility saw more than 16,000 patients -- thanks to Erin Fellows.
According to the Society of Indiana Pioneers, an individual was a pioneer of our county if they resided here on or before December 31, 1825.
Indiana automobile License Plates issued in Clark County start with the prefix 10 because it is the tenth county in alphabetical listing.

Surname: Moore This distinguished British surname recorded in a wide range of spellings including: More, Mores, Moor, Moores, Moors, and in Scotland Muir,
has a number of possible origins. The first is a topographical name for someone who lived on a moor or in a fen, both of which were denoted by the Olde
English pre 7th Century word "mor", or from one of the various villages so named such as Moore in the county of Cheshire, or More in Shropshire. Secondly it may have been a nickname for someone of dark or swarthy complexion. In this case the derivation is from the Old French "more", meaning dark-skinned. There was also a personal name of the same origin, which was borne by several early saints. The given name was introduced into England by the Normans, but was never as popular in England as on the Continent. In Ireland the surname originated as a form of the Gaelic O'Mordha, composed of the elements O', meaning descendant of, and Mordha, a byname translating as proud or stately. In Scotland and Wales the origination was as a nickname for a large man, from the Gaelic word mor or the Welsh mowr, both meaning great. The surname was first recorded in the late 11th Century (see below), and early examples of the surname recording include: William Mor, tax register known as the Feet of Fines for the county of Essex in the year 1198, and Matthew del More in the Court Rolls of the Manor of Wakefield, Yorkshire, in 1275. One of the earliest settlers in the New World was Leonard Moore, who is recorded as "living at Elizabeth Cittee, Virginea" in 1624, having arrived on the ship "Bona Nova" in 1619. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William de More. This was dated 1086, in the Domesday Book of Suffolk, during the reign of King William 1st of England, 1066 - 1087.
