My conclusion is that Madie Mae's dad, ANDREW JACKSON MOORE WAS BORN IN 1859' *** too many A. J. Moore

A Few Facts About Clark County Clark is divided into 12 Civil Townships as follows: Bethlehem, Carr, Charlestown, Jeffersonville, Monroe,
Oregon, Owen, Silver Creek, Union, Utica, Washington and Wood. Clark County was set apart February 3, 1801, by William Henry Harrison, then Governor of the Territory of Indiana.
The County Seat hasn't always been Jeffersonville. The first county seat was Springville. This was a little village, which stood near where Charlestown now stands. This village was on the old Indian trail from the Falls of the Ohio to the Indian nations of the north, west and east. Jonathan Jennings, first Governor of Indiana, lived a short distance from this little town, which was at one time a great trading center for the French and Indians, but nothing remains to tell where the village stood. On June 9, 1802, Governor Harrison issued a proclamation "fixing the seat of justice at the town of Jeffersonville ... after the first day of August next," however, the Territorial Legislature changed it to Charlestown by the Act of
December 14, 1810. On September 23, 1873, the County Seat was permanently located at Jeffersonville. Charlestown was first settled in 1808 and by 1849 (twenty-four years before the County Seat was transferred to Jeffersonville) it contained a Courthouse, Presbyterian County Seminary and Female High School, churches for the Episcopal and Reformed Methodists as well as Baptists and Presbyterians, about 200 dwelling houses and a population of 1,200. Port Fulton, now included within Jeffersonville, was home to the third-largest hospital in the United States during the Civil War. Jefferson General Hospital was built on property confiscated from U.S. Senator Jesse D. Bright, who was a Confederate sympathizer. Under the command of Dr. Middleton Goldsmith from February 21, 1864 to December of 1866, the facility saw more than 16,000 patients -- thanks to Erin Fellows.

Surname: Moore This distinguished British surname recorded in a wide range of spellings including: More, Mores, Moor, Moores, Moors, and in Scotland Muir,
has a number of possible origins. The first is a topographical name for someone who lived on a moor or in a fen, both of which were denoted by the Olde
English pre 7th Century word "mor", or from one of the various villages so named such as Moore in the county of Cheshire, or More in Shropshire. CHUCK Griep FURNISHED THE FOLLOWING COMMENTS: The 1860 census for William Moore says he was married to "Eliza Jane". It also has baby "Andrew J.".
The 1870 census shows William Moore married to "Anna E." with "Jackson" being 12 years old. You found a marriage record for William and Anna in 1867.

Believe it or not, all of this is consistent and gives a couple of snapshots into the William Moore family. I believe these to be the same two families because the location is the same and the data is generally consistent between the two families and with data we have from other sources. The inconsistencies tell a story: something happened to "Eliza Jane" between 1860 and 1867, probably she died since divorce was not common. Note that names may be reported differently between censuses: "Andrew J." vs. "Jackson".

SOURCE: CHARLES GRIEP: the census entry below is for the family of David Moore. He is the free white male between the ages of 30 and 39. There is a woman (probably his wife in this case since there are small children) between the ages of 20 and 29 and two children, a girl under 5 and a boy between 5 and 9. There is no other information, other than the location: Indiana, Clark County, Charlestown Township. Since I added this entry to my database, I must have cross referenced all of the available information with what else I knew about David Moore. That is why I concluded that this was the correct person. In other words, the location and ages of individuals in the family must have been a match with other information I had about David Moore. Can we be sure? Probably not 100%, but I must have been convinced this was correct in this case because I always made a note in the database when I was not pretty sure.

I have a copy of Sabria’s obituary and someone has hand written the date at the top of the clipping. It’s dated 1-24-1885. The article says: On Wednesday morning, 3 (or 8) o’clock, Mrs. Sabria Moore died at her home, one mile from Sellersburg of old age, after being bed bound for a year. The deceased was 80 years old. She leaves seven grown children to mourn her death. The funeral took place at Hamburg graveyard, Thursday, January 22.
The newspaper was reportedly The Evening News, Jeffersonville, IN.
I looked up the year and found that the Wednesday of her death was indeed January 21st, so that checks out. And her age at death, 80, checks with her being born on May 20th, 1804 so, in my mind, that date is correct.
My wife and I visited that cemetery and there is no stone for either David R. or Sabria Moore. Someone did a rough drawing of the cemetery (we saw the drawing at the library in Sellersburg) and listed the names on all of the stones. Their daughter’s stone is there, which we saw, but theirs weren’t. I suspect their stones either didn’t survive or the family couldn’t afford them. My grandfather David Wellington’s stone is handmade, by his children. I had to regrind the lettering a couple of years ago, to make it legible."
