While living in Surry County, North Carolina, he enlisted and served as private with the North Carolina troops as follows: from January, February or March, 1776, three months in Captain Richard Goode's Company in Colonel Joseph Williams' Regiment; from sometime in the summer of 1776, four months in Captain Goode's Company in Colonel Williams' Regiment on an expedition against the Cherokee Indians; next he served three months under Captain Shepperd and was in the battle of Kings Mountain; in 1781, three months in Captain Minor Smith's Company in Colonel James Martin's Regiment and was discharged soon after the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown.
