Carter was born in 1817 in Oglethorpe, Georgia, his father, Edward, was 32 and his mother, Mary, was 23. He married Mary Ann Graham on October 4, 1840, in his hometown. They left GA around 1844 and moved to Desoto, MS. They had ten children in 26 years. He died in 1878 in DeSoto, Mississippi, at the age of 61. 6. | Zachariah S. DALTON was born in 1789 in Rutherford County, North Carolina (son of David DALTON, Jr.); died in 1869 in Monroe County, Tennessee. Notes: Alive at 1870 Census, Monroe County, Tennessee. He purchased, with John Smith, 200 acres of land in Cocke County, Tennessee. (Grant # 22602) on 20 April 1838. He and Mary are also listed as members of the Slate Creek Baptist Church (Membership List -- 1812-1876), but it is not known when they moved to Cocke County, but it was probably in 1837 when Zach requested a letter of dismissal from the Church. They moved to McMinn County, Tennessee by 1850 and to Monroe County by 1860 (Census). Zachariah married Mary Poly JONES. Mary was born in 1809; died in 1891. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |

Notes: Edward Carter was born on September 8, 1785, in Mecklenburg, Virginia. He married Mary Kidd and they had four children together. Mary died and he then married Sarah Carter on July 29, 1811. Sarah died and he married Milly Wright on 9 Aug 1849. He died on April 5, 1877, in Walton, Georgia, at the impressive age of 91, and was buried there. 12. | David DALTON, Jr. was born on 27 Feb 1751 in Albemarle County, Virginia (son of David DALTON, Sr.); died about 1835 in Henderson County, North Carolina. Notes: Tombstone says birth date 27 February 17---; estimates are about 1752. Buried in Friendship Baptist Church, Saluda, North Carolina. On 16 March 1801 David, Jr. purchased 50 acres for 12 pounds, 10 shillings from a David Miller on the waters of Cove Creek, southeast of the "Brooker's". David lived on Howard Gap Road in present -day Polk County in his declining years. He is thought to have moved there in the 1820s from the Cove Creek area. Both Saluda Magazine and the book "Sketches of Polk County History" by Sadie Smathers Patton, tell of an Englishman, David Dalton, who lived on Howard Gap Road in Polk County, and whose family "married and intermarried" with the Morris, Thompson and Rhodes families., as being the progenitor of the Dalton's in Henderson and Polk Counties. It is believed that "Englishman" to have been David Jr's father, David, Sr.
