    When Elijah "Ely" G. Carter was born in 1817 in Oglethorpe, Georgia, his father, Edward, was 32 and his mother, Mary, was 23. He married Mary Ann Graham on October 4, 1840, in his hometown. They left GA around 1844 and moved to Desoto, MS. They had ten children in 26 years. He died in 1878 in DeSoto, Mississippi, at the age of 61.

    DeSoto County changed to Tate County in 1873.

He and Mary are also listed as members of the Slate Creek Baptist Church (Membership List -- 1812-1876), but it is not known when they moved to Cocke County, but it was probably in 1837 when Zach requested a letter of dismissal from the Church. They moved to McMinn County, Tennessee by 1850 and to Monroe County by 1860 (Census).
