With father from Warwickshire, England about 1654 to Virginia to Maryland, purchased 300 acres on St. Clement's Bay in 1658.
A mariner and planter, served as Justice of St. Mary's County and on the Potomac in St. Mary's County from 1658 to 1660; on Governor's Council 28 Feb 1669. Commissioned a justice of the peace for Charles County, MD 1 Aug 1672 and served until about 1687. Member Church of England.
At a meeting of the Council heald at Mattapanye on 16 Jun 1676, the Council ordered the "Mr. Benj. Rose and Major Wm. Boarman received the foure Indian prisoners from Capt Lieut. Barton and convey them safely Over to Collonel Nicholas Spencer and in his absence to Lieut Collonel John Washington or Major Isaac Alderton" 207 (Archives of MD, Vol 15, page 92).
In 1683 he was on the committe for the advancement of trade in Charles County. In 1687 he was recommended for the council and in 1689, he was member of the commisssion to regulate civil affairs in the county and was to retain his commission.
On 22 Sep 1687, a council held in St. Mary's City appointed Capt. William Barton to a "new commission of the Peace and Tryall of Causes" for Charles County. At his recommissioning on 26 Nov 1678, he was called Capt. William Barton. In 1681 he was a Magistrate of Charles Co. Court in MD and was Captain of the Foot (infantry) of the Provincial Militia.
1689: William Barton signed a petition as a "Protestant Subject of Their Most Excellent Majesty King William and Queen Mary". He served as a vestryman in Port Tobacco Parish.
1696 listed as a civil officer of Charles County.

William Smoote, the father of Ann (Smoote) (Hungerford) Barton assigned to William Barton Jr. and Thomas Smoote and their heirs, forever, a patent for 240 acres granted to him on May 26, 1658.
At Court, Charles Co., MD Oct. 1, 1662, William Barton Jr. delivered the patent his father-in- law, William Smoote, assigned to him and his brother-in-law, Thomas Smoote on May 28, 1658, quoting: "unto his Brother-in-law Thomas Smoote for the use of William Hungerfot Junior, son of William Hungerfot, deceased." Libe A, Folio 243. His first wife Ann, evidently died in the year 1662 and for this reason the above land was returned to the child's relatives for his benefit.
Among those chosen by the principal freeholders for vestrymen and appointed at a Court held at Benedict Leonard Town on Feb 14, 1692 was Mr. William Barton. Liber K, Folio 152, 153. Later he was one of six vestrymen for Church at Charles Town called St. Pauls Parish around 1696. Liber H D, Folio 47. He was also a Vestryman for a parish at Port Tobacco, MD. Liber H D, Folio 47. This was the William and Mary Parish in Charles Co., MD.
9 Aug 1681 recorded as Capt. William Barton, Commissioner, Liber Bf.223 Md. Arch. Vol 15, page 405. In 1684 named among those regulating the affairs of the Militia in Charles County Maryland and referred to as Captain many times.
This deed proves the marriage of Mary Barton to Thomas Warren and the marriage of her sister, Elizabeth Barton to Thomas Smoote. It also proves William and Mary Barton were their parents and their marriage was solemnized before June 13, 1688, the date of the deed. "This indenture made the 13th day of June in the thirteenth yeare of the Dominion of the Right Honorable Charles Lord Baltimore Absolute Lord and Protector of Maryland on and in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred Eighty and Eight between William Barton Jr. of Charles Co. in the Province of Maryland Gentleman of the one part and Thomas Warren of the aforesaid county and Province Planter and Mary his wife the Naturall born daughter of the said William Barton of the other Part witnesseth that the said William Barton for and in consideration of that Naturall lova and fatherly affection which he hath and doth always bear unto the said Mary his natruall borne Daughter the wife of the said Thomas Warren and also for divers other good causes and considerations him hereunto more Especially moveing hath given, granted Confirmed and by these presents Doth fully and Absolutely give grant and Confirme unto him the said Thomas Warren and Mary his wife all that Parcell of land called....? Swamp lying in Charles County and beginning at a bounded white oake standing in the woods on the west side of Zackyah Swamp about a mile for the said ...? Swamp in the north and by west line of Nathan Barton land formerly taken up by Daniell Johnson" . ....... which said two Parcells of land conteyned by estimation about one hundred and forty eight acres together with all and singular the Houses buildings and edifices...... the said two parcells of land unto him the said Thomas Warren and Mary his wife to the only proper use and behoofe of him the said Thomas Warren and Mary his wife During theire natural lives and to the heirs of theire body lawfully begotten or to be begotten forever and in case of default of such I give then the said two Parcells of land are hereby given granted and Confirmed unto Thomas Smoot and Elizabeth his wife the natural borne daughter of him the said Wm Barton to have and to hold the aforesaid two Parcells of land and all and singular the premises with their and Every use and behoofe of him the said Thomas Smoot and Elizabeth his wife during their natural lives and to the heirs of her body lawfully begotten or to be begotten forever. ........ and the said William Barton and Mary his wife have granted for them and their heirs that they will warrant to the said Thomas Warren and Mary his wife during their natural lives and the heirs of her body lawfully begotten or to be begotten them within mentioned given and granted premises with the Apurtenances and for Default of such issue as aforesaid to Thomas Smoote and Elizabeth his wife during theire natural lives and to the heirs of her body lawfully begotten or to be begotten agt. him the said William Barton and Mary his wife and their heirs and agt. all other persons whatsoever according to the forme and Effect of the within written Indenture. 27 Mar 1689 William Barton signed an article assuring the citizens there was no planned disturbance by Indians and Roman Catholics and the purpose to kill Protestants was false. (PRO Colonial Papers, Vol. 8 Md. Arch 1687-1693. Was named at the Court at Whitehall 8 Oct 1691 as one of the most substantial Protestant inhabitants - PRO Colonial Papers, folio 8 (ibid p. 285).
26 May 1658, William Barton Jr., delivers patent and assigns rights to his rights to his brother in law Thomas Smoote for the use of William Hungerford Jr. son of William Hungarford, dec'd. Patent granted to William Smoot by assignment from John Lugar Jr.; 240 acres lying on the west side of Wicomico River at the head of Forked Creek, Monor of St. Mary's; bounded by Humphrey Atwicks and Thomas Mitchell endorsed from William Smoot to William Barton Jr. and Thomas Smith.

I William Barton of Charles County in the Province of Maryland Gent & being very Sick & weak of body but of Sound & perfect mind and memory Praised be almighty God for the same & Considering the frailty of human life & that all must yield when God by Death is pleased to Call doe make this my last Will & Testament in manner & Form Folowing hereby Disannulling & making voyd all former & other Will or Wills by me here to fore made Imprimis. I Give my Soule to almighty God Trusting & Relying upon the full pardon & Remission of my Sinns through ye merritts and Intercession of my Blessed Saviour & Redeemer Jesus Christ. My Body I committ to Earth to be buryed in such decent manner as my Eccds hereafter named shall think most convenient. And as for what worldly Estate God hath pleased to bless me with I Dispose of the Same as followeth. Appraisal of his personal estate was filed 19 Oct 1717 citing a value of 152 lbs, 9 shillings, 9 pence, including among other items, one negro and a parcel of books. (Inventories and Accounts, Liber 39C, folio 49).
