    and she in Virginia. They lived in Greene county until after the Civil War, then moved to Sweetwater in Monroe County, Tenn. They are buried there. They had five daughters and one son, Mary, Catherine, Elizabeth, Margaret, S(?)harlott and Jonathon R. They were all born in Virginia. Jonathon R was born in 1830 and died in 1865. He was a sergeant in the Confederate Army and died with two other soldiers in a skirmish 12 miles from his home in Greene County, TN. All three were buried in a common grave near a place called Roaring Springs, TN. He was Married to Ellen Tellena Self of Sullivan county.     Jonathan joined the 29th Regiment of the TN Infantry of the Confederacy Army, in Henderson, TN on August 21, 1861. His name was spelled Jon, Jonathan and Johnathan on various pay vouchers and muster rolls. He was promoted to Sergeant on November, 1, 1862. One Muster roll shows him in Dalton, GA on Jan 15, 1864. He is thought to have fought with his childhood friend and Capitan, Jackson Decator Bushong, through-out the South before returning with him to East TN near the end of the war where they both died in a skirmish on April 4, 1865 (see Album Section)..

    Jonathan married Ellen Tellena SELF on 07 Sep 1856 in Greene County, TN.. Self's family gave some land for a small school named Mossey Creek-something like a vocational school. My sister, Ellen, said Granddad McGuffin took a carpentery course there and later taught the course. The McGuffins lived near by. The school was later called Mossey Creek College for the Mossey Creek which flowed through the land. The name later changed to Carson College and the woman's school which was Newman College. Later it was combined and called Carson-Newman.

    census, and when Johathan David McGuffin and his companions were
    killed, their horses were stolen.

    Information gathered from notes of Wilda McGuffin Bebee. Wilda did
    family history research on several of her trips to Tennessee. Dates the
    information was gathered and the sources are unknown. The McGuffins
    came (to the United States) in 1830 through Virginia. There were four
    brothers. Three brothers stayed in this country and one went back.
    In another note, the McGuffins were said to be from Mohawk, Tenn.

    information from Audrey Taylor McGuffin Phelps, submitted by her son,
    Daniel McGuffin Phelps, undated, titled, "The Kirk Massacre," in the last

    Third New International Dictionary cites, "Jonathan 1: a son of Saul and
