Born as John A Peterson 5 Jul 1904 in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada.
His parents moved from Iowa to Canada. When they returned to Iowa,
the US Government said they had to change the spelling of their
surname from Peterson to Petersen.

Married: 26 Dec 1927
Died: 27 Aug 1963. I was told he died at home (Cedar Mill,
Washington, Oregon) from a heart attack, but the Oregon Death Index
says he died in Multnomah County, so maybe he was pronounced dead at
the hospital (about 7 miles away in Multnomah County).

I was looking at some old Polk's Portland directories and saw that in
1937, John and Ethel were living on NW Wilson in Portland. He was a
chipper for ESFCO (the company later became the well-known ESCO). The
following year is when he and Ethel are shown with an address of RD 5
Box 451, which is near Cedar Mill. When they first moved near Cedar
Mill, they rented a home until the construction on their permanent
home was finished. I couldn't find a 1939 directory, but in 1940 they
are shown living in their permanent home. The home, torn down in the
90's to make way for road construction, was beautiful. The outside was
mostly Red Cedar and Redwood.

John became a bigshot at the ESCO Portland office, but always made
lots of time to go out hunting and fishing. Ethel always went
fishing, crabbing and clamming with him. John and Ethel fought a lot,
because Ethel was jealous of the secretaries John had. I don't
remember ever visiting them when they didn't end up fighting.

John married Ethel Lenore PHELPS on 26 Dec 1927 in per family Bible/Oregon, USA. Ethel (daughter of Charles "Poppa" Nelson PHELPS and Dora Eleanor LOOP) was born on 12 Sep 1910 in New Tazewell, Claiborne, Tennessee, USA; died on 25 Feb 1973 in died in home fire, probably of smoke inhalation/Garibaldi, Tillamook, Oregon, USA; was buried in 1973 in Skyline Memorial Gardens/Portland, Multnomah, Oregon, USA. After John died, Ethel remarried and ended up moving to Hillsboro, Oregon. She had a house moved to my mom's small farm - not a small mother-in-law type house, but a large 2-story one which dwarfed my mom's home...lol. She wanted it set right on top of the garden, so that's where it was placed. That was the only area we had that was good for a garden (most of the rest was for livestock), so I never again had to spend time weeding there...lol.

Ethel later moved near the coast, into a mobile home, close to one of her favorite fishing areas. She died of smoke inhalation in a fire.It was claimed she was intoxicated, and probably left a lit cigarette smoldering when she feel asleep. They said she probably did not wake up, so didn't feel any pain.

subject ethel phelps Important mainly because of the people in the conversation. My grandma's obituary says her name was actually Ethyl Lenore Phelps.
Her funeral notice was published in the Oregonian, March 1, 1973 Her obituary said she was born 19 Sep 1910.
Her daughter, Sally, was shown with the wrong surname in the obit. Sally was born 28 Nov 1935 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon and is
married to Norman K Sperling (born 3 Nov 1927).
Her mom's (Dora Loop) obituary was published in The Oregonian, February 27, 1942, but wasn't completely copied onto the site to which
I recently subscribed. It looks like it says she died in the McMinnville general hospital (in Yamhill County, OR).
I found a high school photo of my cousin, Gary Lawrence Sperling (born 16 Jun 1956 in Oregon). he's the son of Ethyl's younger daughter
(Sally Marie, born 28 Nov 1935 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon) and Norman K Sperling (born 3 Nov 1927)

Charles was shown in 1942's "U.S. World War II Fourth Registration Draft Cards" database as being married to Hilda E. There were no kids
from his 2nd marriage. I just updated Charles' information to show he died in the Washington County part of Portland, not the Multnomah County part.
I never heard him called anything other than Poppa. Even the neighbors called him that.
