Rev Harold Duncan, Century Assembly Officating Valarie Chasteen said the following: This picture(#1) says a lot to me about the love and fun we shared at the cabin with grandma and grandpa. It always makes me smile. My mom reminded me last night that when grandpa bought the boat the steering cables were reversed so that when you turned the steering wheel left, it went right. We actually went out on Cataract Lake in it like that but later he had it repaired. ~~~~~ Chester Arthur Chasteen worked hard raising a family during the depression. He met Madie Mae Beam when he was 20 years old. His mother, Ida belle Phelps Chasteen, invited her over for a dinner with a few other church members. Chester was a religious boy, but he had back sledded to the ways of the world. He was a sinner, but after he met Madie he went to church whenever the church doors opened. Ida Belle said he got saved and quit smoking cigars. I’m Chester’s son, Paul Chester Chasteen, writing this. Madie had married Lovell Arnold Beam in 1922. They had a son the next year named Jack Lovell Beam. Four years later on 21 Feb 1926 Lovell died of TB. She got a job at the sanitarium where Lovell was being treated to be near him. Lovell played the piano and one day he passed a church and went in. They needed a piano player so he volunteered. He told them of his illness so they prayed for his healing. He was converted and was baptized. Madie was also baptized. They attended the same church as Ida Belle. After Lovell died mom had met dad at this dinner party in 1927. They were attracted to each other and shortly thereafter they got married and on 17 June 1928 John and I arrived. Eighteen months they had a daughter named Marcene Mae Chasteen. They referred to her as a blue baby, but at the time they were afraid it could be catching so Ida Bell took the twins and didn’t give them back until they were 15 years old. Marcene lived for nine months. Years later they learned her heart did not allowed the blood to be purified. During World War two he worked for the New York Central Railroad Repair Shops in Beech Grove Indiana. He bought three acres of land on South Emerson Avenue about one and half miles from the RR shops. As he could afford it he built three houses. The first one was later referred to as the chicken house. He raised chickens in the first house for the eggs which he sold. Mom would kill the chickens when they stopped producing and sell them. Dad dug a water well and an outside toilet. The outhouse (privy) was well equipped with a Sears and Roebuck Catalog, and it wasn’t there to look at. Every Monday mom would the laundry outside in a large cast iron tub and hang it outside to dry. Dad had a large garden and mom would can the veggies. He also worked on weekends for the Railway Express sorting boxes being mailed in boxcars. He also worked for the Barbersol shaving cream company. At the railroad he bucked rivets on the metal boxcars. That was a hot, dirty and noisy job. After the war he was allowed to quit the railroad job. After the war he had two more sons James Rodney and Stephen Lee and a daughter named Rebecca Ann. He quit the railroad after the war ended and worked as a machine operator for International Harvester where they made truck engines. As time went by he built two more houses each bigger and better that the earlier ones. They all had inside plumbing and inside automatic washing machines and dryers. He retired from there about 1963. As the children got married and left home things got a bit easier for dad. Rebecca got married in 1949, James in 1952 and Stephen in 1967. A few years later in 1948 he built small cabin near Counot Lake near Cloverdale, Indiana. All the grand children would spend time with him at the lake. He got a boat and a moped mainly for the grandchildren. | CHASTEEN, Chester Arthur (I18297)

19 | Andrew was a bee keeper, a fiddle player, a photographer, a craftsman and a farmer, ~~~~~~ the railroad was constructed through the area in 1879, the Stapleton depot was named "Sunbright," and the name was eventually applied to the entire town. Andrew treaveled from Burrville to Sunbright to catch the train to Lincoln ,Kentucky where he met Mary Alice Phelps, Married her and returned to Burrville. ~~~~~~ Sharon Jerry Alexander Bond wrote: "Mom (Shirley A Peters B:16 Apr 1926) remembers how her grandfather, Andrew, used to pack his camera and tripod over his shoulder and walk off into the piney woods....He would be gone for a couple of days taking pictures. Uncle Ray (Raymer Phelps Peters Jr B: 26 Sep 1920:) , her oldest brother and Andrew's grandson, was a great photographer as well. He took literally thousands of pictures and slides. " ~~~~~~ Afer looking at my census data it looks like Andrew Layton moved from Morgan County Tennessee between 1908-1909 to St Tammany, Louisiana, USA this is based on the fact that his daughter Reba was about age 2 in 1910 and she was born in Tennessee. Shirley Ardell Peters Alexander estimated that Andrew moved his family to Poplarville, Mississippi about 1914. ~~~~~~ Andrew was blind in one eye...In our family, my mother,Shirley Ardell Peters, and her siblings called them Pop Peters and Mom Alice instead of grandfather and grandmother...they were my great-grandparents....I never knew them stated Sharon Jerry Alexander Bond. ~~~~~~ Andrew L. She informed me that my brother, Steve, passed away. He was born on 21 August 1940. He was a soldier, a teacher, and business man in Portland OR. He is survived by his wife, Julie, his children: Scotty, Yolanda, Chuck, and Stephen. Steve and Julie were married on 22 Jul 1967 at the Presidio, San Francisco, CA I am so happy to have attended Scotty's wedding in Las Vegas last February(2006). Steve invited Loretta and me along with my twin brother, John, and his wife, Margaret for lunch at his RV in Las Vegas. Julie fixed a gourmet lunch. We had a great visit. Stephen had just sold his business and retired full time. He was an avid golfer and collected baseball cards. When Yolanda was involved with softball, he and Julie were deeply involved with managing the ball league and the concession stand supporting the softball league. When Steve was 11 years old he spent the summer with Loretta and me while I was attending Purdue University. He would caddy for golfers on the Purdue golf course. He is responsible for me becoming a postage stamp collector. I would ask the foreign students to give me the stamps from their letters for him. I would only give him about 50% of the stamps with the idea of giving the others later. Guess what? Later never came. For the last several days I have told myself that Stephen Lee can't be gone. He is my youngest brother and I'll miss him forever. I had visions that he would kick dirt on my grave. Several times when we would go to walking events in Vancouver, Washington we would stay with Julie and Steve. They were such a happy couple. Julie would prepare a special breakfast for Yolanda. I remember in the early sixties when we bought a lot on 34th Street in Indianapolis next to the house my twin brother was building Steve came over to help me cut down all the undergrowth. We had long talks about his future. At that time he was pursuing a career as a singer. I can't remember if he volunteered for the military or if he was drafted. In any event he was stationed in San Francisco, California where he met the love of his life, Julie Astudillo. After the military he went to Indiana University. Later he was offered a teaching job in Maryland. For a few weeks he stayed with us in West Springfield, VA. while he looked for a house for him and Julie. I really treasure those memories. I now remember we went to visit Steve and we all went to the race track where they were racing the sulky. We paid $2 on each and lost it all. It was so much fun. Julie's dad had an entry which we bet on and it was winning when it blew a tire. It was my plan to visit him next spring as part of our 60th wedding celebration. Paul c Chasteen ~~~~~~ My memory of Uncle Steve was just before he went into the Army. I was less than 10 years old so it has a few holes in it. He lived with Grandma and Grandpa on Ritter Street and he was getting rid of his stuff that he couldn't take with him. There were record albums that he asked if I wanted. He gave me several 45s by Elvis Presley and the LP, Mr. Tambourine Man by the Byrds with Bob Dylan. I just about wore them out listening to them but still have them. He kept his car at our house for a while. It was a maroon Mustang and he gave my sisters and me a ride in it. As others have said, I thought he was incredibly cool. He was only 5 years younger than my dad. But dad didn't drive a Mustang! Here are a couple old good pictures of Steve. Sorry they are so big, even after reducing them. In RAC4.jpg Steve is the closest person on the right side, in front of my dad. It looks like maybe a Thanksgiving dinner in a garage? I'm guessing Uncle Jack took the picture. Anyone with a memory of that event, speak up. MMM27.jpg is a church picnic picture, a lot of the Chasteen clan are scattered around. I've found Madie, Chester, Rebecca, Jim [my dad], and Steve. Steve is the child 5th from the left in the front row and I'm guessing he was well under 10 years old by the looks of my dad [over on the end of the front row with a grass stain on his knee!]. Valarie Chasteen Griep ~~~~~~ Thanks for sharing the information about Uncle Steve. I too remember their visit when we lived in Springfield. I think they were at my high school graduation, but maybe they were just visiting at that time. I remember taking the bus to visit them in Teaneck, NJ when I was in high school. I think this was in 1970 or 1971. I believe they were staying with Julie's parents at the time. I read a book while visiting about a dog or cat that got lost, but made its way back home after a very long journey. It is funny what we remember. I do remember how cool we thought Uncle Steve was back in the early 1960's. He was at Granny C's cabin with us for a visit. I am sorry that I won't see him again and regret it has been so long since our last visit. Jann Chasteen Griffths ~~~~~~ I remember Uncle Steve at Grandma & Grandpa's cabin. He brought his guitar and sat and played his guitar and sang to us kids. At least I think he had a guitar. We thought he was "the cat's pajamas." He must have been in his 20s. I thought he was so cool. (I think my sisters did also.) If I remember correctly, he may have been in a band of some kind at that time. The last time I saw him was when I went to the train station with him in Washington, D.C. (when we lived in West Springfield). I drove his little car back to our house. I was about 17 or 18 and it was an interesting trip driving that sports car through D.C. and back home. I know I was nervous. It may have even been close to rush hour. Viveca Chasteen Park ~~~~~~` I do remember him during my youth while still living in Indiana. He was very handsome and had a beautiful voice. I loved to listen to him sing and can still hear his voice it in my mind. When he and Julie were married they rented a flat in the city (San Francisco) near the Marina and Wharf district. They didn't own a car and walked or took public transit everywhere. I was attending college in Santa Cruz and they invited me for a visit. Uncle Steve met me downtown near his office and took me out to lunch. I remember we were to meet on the square, downtown. I was very nervous, not being a city girl, and afraid I wouldn't be able to find him, but there he was just where he said he would be. He was so handsome in a perfectly tailored suit, briefcase in hand looking very distinguished with his dark hair and goatee. It was a wonderful weekend; we ate, laughed and walked everywhere. They were the perfect couple and it was clear to me that they were very much in love. My husband, Jeff, was an avid sailor and loved boats. Jeff and I took Uncle Steve on a bay cruise in our 23 Canadian Racing Sloop. He loved being out on the water, caught the fever and bought that boat from us. He was passionate in his endeavors and diligently researched everything he took on. Uncle Steve was a gentle soul. He had a beautiful smile that warmed every room he entered. His laugh was contagious and he had a delightful sense of humor. These are my fondest memories of my Uncle Steve. Viveca Chasteen Park ~~~~~~ I do remember him during my youth while still living in Indiana. 42 | WFT #2385 - In 1770, following the death of his father, William chose Samuel Landrum as his guardian. In March 1776, he enlisted for service in the Revolutionary Was as a private. He was discharged in March of 1778 and re-enlisted on April 9, 1778 as a corporal. Contained within William's Revolutionary War pension application are 8 pages of material written by William detailing his service as a Revolutionary War soldier. During his time of service, he served at the Battle of Stoney Point, and at the Siege of Charleston. During the Siege of Charleston, William received two wounds. "...I received two wounds by bombshells that I shall carry to my grave one in my butt and one in my secret parts." William also recounts that two others with whom he served were killed after he was wounded, "when sergeant Hundly was killed and Richard Spenler was killed one was taking [care] of me when he was killed and the other close to me a few days after colonel Parker was killed by a cannon ball." On May 12, 1780, the Siege of Charleston ended with William and hundreds of others being taken captive. They were held captive for approximately 14 months. On July 8, 1781, after being released through a prisoner exchange program, William was discharged from service. Until June 15, 1793, little else is known about William's whereabouts. However, it appears that he spent at least some of that time in North Carolina. One June 15, 1793, William took possession of land in Montgomery County, Virgina. He sold that land on May 12, 1804. By 1807, William was residing in Giles County, Virginia, where he stayed until 1810. In 1810, William was living in Cabell County, Virginia and remained there through part of 1815. In 1850, he moved to Russell County, Virginia. There he remained until he died on October 12, 1821. | TILLER, William (I62413)
