Oscar was born on his parents' farm in Rockingham Co, near Stokesdale, NC. He was the third of ten children. After his father's death in 1915, Oscar, along with his brother Bill, decided not to assume the operation of the family farm. Oscar worked for many years at Union Station in Washington, DC, where he was an agent for the Southern Railroad. He never married.
Oscar died at the YMCA in Winston-Salem where he was living after retirement. He is buried next to his parents and his brother Paul, who died an infant.
