- Mike & Dela's Love Story
Mike met Dela on Saturday October 13th, 2007 in Sylva, North Carolina. Mike had a buddy, Ray, in one of his education classes whose wife, Nancy, had a friend named Dela.
The initial plan was to have us both over to their place for dinner and cards. Then, Nancy decided that she better screen Mike first and make sure that he was worthy of meeting Dela. At the last minute, however, Dela decided to come and Nancy prepared delicious vegetarian lasagna. It was still light out when Mike arrived. Dela was wearing a purple shirt and blue jeans. Mike was immediately smitten and Dela returned his attention by flirting while they were playing post-dinner games. Dela was also impressed how well Nancy's daughter, Kennedy, took to Mike and his love for pets. Dela gave Mike a ride to the bottom of the Crawford's steep driveway. They both said good night. Dela turned right on the four-lane and Mike turned left.
A few days later, Mike took Ray to Guadalupe's, a local restaurant, and bought him some goat in exchange for Dela's phone number. Mike called Dela on Tuesday and she returned his call on Thursday but got Mike's voicemail. They were finally able to talk, when Mike called back. Dela was at the Fun Factory where she was hanging out with Nancy, Kennedy and Kennedy's brother, Ty, so it was a little noisy. Mike and Dela made plans for Saturday, October 27th.
Mike and Dela met at Bogart's (formerly Grandma's Pancake Barn) on East Main Street. Mike was the first to arrive and was holding the column up in front of the door. Dela would later confide that Mike was not unpleasant to look at in his sunglasses and blue button up. They had a nice meal in the backroom with a rowdy group of Mennonite folks who had three tables pulled together. Mike learned of Dela's unrelenting passion for sweet tea.
After dinner, they took Dela's car about a quarter of a mile to the Quin Theatre where they saw a forgettable cop drama called "We Own the Night". Mike enjoyed how he and Dela's arms touched throughout the movie. After the movie, Dela dropped Mike off at his car, where they kissed goodnight. Mike retrieved a small aloe plant called Stevie that he had bought for her. When he got home, he texted Dela and told her how beautiful she had looked. They were happily married at Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina a year and a half later.
