- John McGuffin arrived in America on the ship Superior on June 12, 1824.
GENERAL: Doc. No. McG-1985-1, p. 6. Typewritten narrative entitled
Tennesse McGuffins by Audrey Taylor McGuffin Phelps. John David McGuffin, my great, great grandfather, married Nancy Cook. He was born in Ireland and she in Virginia. They lived in Green county until after the Civil War, then moved to Sweetwater in Monroe County, Tenn. They are buried there.
They had five daughters and one son, Mary, Catherine, Elizabeth,
Margaret, S(?)harlott and Jonathon David. They were all born in Virginia.
Jonathon David was born in 1830 and was killed in the civil War on April 4, 1865, just five days before the end of the war. He was buried on a small knoll near Roaring Springs in Greene County, Tn. See the two stories on Jonathan in the album section.
He was married to Ellen Tellena Self of Sullivan county.

McGuffin Phelps. Date of notes is unknown, title is "Tennessee McGuffins
Given to Me by Selma Long." This is essentially an earlier version of Doc.
No. McG-1985-1, p. 6, with the following additional information: the
information originated with Selma Long, the names and ages of John
David McGuffin's children were taken from the 1860 Greene County
census, and when Johathan David McGuffin and his companions were
killed, their horses were stolen.

Information gathered from notes of Wilda McGuffin Bebee. Wilda did
family history research on several of her trips to Tennessee. Dates the
information was gathered and the sources are unknown. The McGuffins
came (to the United States) in 1830 through Virginia. There were four
brothers. Three brothers stayed in this country and one went back.
In another note, the McGuffins were said to be from Mohawk, Tenn.

information from Audrey Taylor McGuffin Phelps, submitted by her son,
Daniel McGuffin Phelps, undated, titled, "The Kirk Massacre," in the last
line, Audrey wrote: "I think the McGuffin side of the family came
(immigrated to the United States) about 1830."

Child 1 Jonathon David MCGUFFIN
NAME: Spelling of Jonathon could possibly be Jonathan, but various
handwritten documents could be interpreted as either spelling. Webster's
Third New International Dictionary cites, "Jonathan 1: a son of Saul and
friend of David according to the account in I Samuel."

Tennessee. Jonathan R McGuffin and Ellen Self were married Sept 7,
1856, at Green County, Tennessee.
