- Ruth attended elementary school and two years of high school in Washington, DC. She graduated from Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, NC. She began college at University of Texas in El Paso in 1963 and continued taking college courses in Lompoc, CA., Kwajalein, MI (Univ of Hawaii), Univ of ND and at University of North Carolina in Greensboro, NC. Received degree in History at UNCG and in 2009 is still continuing to take fun courses at UNCG.
Ruth met Vestal when her family first moved to North Carolina in 1948 and she was only 15. She would go to his father's farm house each day to buy milk. This milk was unpasteurized and sold in half gallon jars and had about 50% cream at the top. Vestal was attending college at the time and happen to be home one day when Ruth cameto buy milk. When he saw her, sparks began to fly and after two years of courtship, the rest is history.. They were married in 1950 by Vestal's best friends father who was a non denominational preacher and who had never performed a ceremony (he was in his late 60s). Now, 63 years later (2014), we are still happily married..
Hobbies include: water sports (skiing, sailing, snorkeling, sailing, fishing), traveling, history, art, classical and jazz music, book clubs & reading, knitting, and cooking. She also served as leader of a brownie girl scout troop when her daughters were in that age group.
