John B. ORRELL

Notes:

Last time I sent a transcript of the death cert for a John Vance
Orrell. At the time I wasn't sure that he was "our" guy, but now I'm
sure that he is. Here are further notes on John Orrell, husband of
Etta Turner:

(1) After Etta's death, John married (c.1916) Gracie Eggleston. He was
48; she was 19.

(2) Discrepancies relating to John Orrell's parents:
Dan L. Orrell & Lee Anne Rankin -- the death certificate.
D. M. & Leona Orrell -- the 1870 NC census (inferred).
Washington & Maggie Orrell -- Kristina Turner (2002). *******

(3) Discrepancies relating to John Orrell's birth date:
Oct 1866 -- the 1900 census (age 33).
Oct 1867 -- the death certificate.
1868-1869 -- the 1870 (age 1) and 1880 (age 11) censuses.
1869-1870 -- the 1920 census (age 50).

(4) Census data:

1870 NC: John Orrell, age 1, living with D. M. & Leona Orrell.

1880 NC: John Orrell, age 11, living with grandfather Albert Rankin.

The 1900 North Carolina census lists John [?] Orrell, age 33, born Oct
1866 in NC, married for 11 years, and living with his wife Etta and two
children at 517 Green St. in Greensboro. John's occupation is
"Shipping Clerk" and he can read and write. He rents his home. Both
of his parents were born in NC. The children are:
Percy H Son age 9
Roy L Son age 6
Also listed are two of Etta's sisters, Era Turner and Ora Turner.

The 1910 North Carolina census lists John V Orell, age 42?, born in NC,
married for 20 years, and living with his wife Etta and two children at
a house on Boulevard St. John's occupation is "Bone cloth man" at a
"Finishing Mill" where he works for wages. He rents his home. Both of
his parents were born in NC. The children are:
Persey P Son age 19?
LeRoy Son age 16

The 1920 North Carolina census lists J V Orrill, age 50, born in NC,
and living with his wife Gracie (age 22) as boarders in the home of G K
Eggleston. JV's occupation is "Foreman" at a "Cotton Mill" where he
works for wages. He can read and write. Both of his parents were born
in NC.

Family/Spouse: Etta Virginia TURNER. Etta (daughter of John H. R.\TURNER and Sarepta Jane PLUMMER) was born in May 1872 in NC; died on 09 Jul 1915 in Spray, R'ham Co., NC; was buried in Green Hill Cemetery, Greensboro, NC. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
