the railroad was constructed through the area in 1879, the Stapleton depot was named "Sunbright," and the name was eventually applied to the entire town. Andrew treaveled from Burrville to Sunbright to catch the train to Lincoln ,Kentucky where he met Mary Alice Phelps, Married her and returned to Burrville.

Sharon Jerry Alexander Bond wrote: "Mom (Shirley A Peters B:16 Apr 1926) remembers how her grandfather, Andrew, used to pack his camera and tripod over his shoulder and walk off into the piney woods....He would be gone for a couple of days taking pictures. Uncle Ray (Raymer Phelps Peters Jr B: 26 Sep 1920:) , her oldest brother and Andrew's grandson, was a great photographer as well. He took literally thousands of pictures and slides. "

Afer looking at my census data it looks like Andrew Layton moved from Morgan County Tennessee between 1908-1909 to St Tammany, Louisiana, USA this is based on the fact that his daughter Reba was about age 2 in 1910 and she was born in Tennessee. Shirley Ardell Peters Alexander estimated that Andrew moved his family to Poplarville, Mississippi about 1914.

Andrew was blind in one eye...In our family, my mother,Shirley Ardell Peters, and her siblings called them Pop Peters and Mom Alice instead of grandfather and grandmother...they were my great-grandparents....I never knew them stated Sharon Jerry Alexander Bond.

Sharon Jerry Alexander states: Granddaddy (Raymer Phelp Peters) and Uncle Ray (Raymer Phelps Peters Jr) went to work on the Panama canal. I have a great old picture of Granddaddy coming home with his suitcase in his hand and his hat on his head. There may be one of Ray as well. Ray was in the FBI after serving in WWII....He graduated Purdue University and went into the FBI. Before he retired, he was director of the FBI in Tucson, Arizona, for many years. He was also an artist. Remarkable man. I cannot believe you found this ship information!

Hi Paul Thank you for all of your great research. All that I know about Trafton's early years is that he was born in central Tenn. in 1903
(near the birth place of Alvin York, I've heard stories that he was related to Sgt York). His parents and he moved to the Picayune area where Trafton
first met Lena, his soon to be wife singing in the Church choir. They married and Trafton built a house in Yamacraw (I think the house still stands)
where the 4 children were born. Some years later Trafton and his family moved to Clinton, MS where he was employed at Mississippi College until retirement.
The house in Clinton still stands and is at 601 Capitol Street. Dad has told me many stories of Trafton's great skill in carpentry and hunting.
While living near the swamp at Yamacraw he caught alligator, deer etc. I've never heard of his dad and him building spiral stair cases, but with his
carpentry skills it's very possible. I know he built the house at Yamacraw by himself from the ground up. I hope this was a help. My cousin Val
Holston has done research in Trafton's background I'm sure he could be of great help. If you would like to talk to my dad, Wayne (Trafton's son)

Trafton raised his family in Yamicraw, MS near crossroads by the Pine Grove Baptist Church. Trafton was a Carpenter. He became head of Maintains at Mississippi College, after moving to Clinton MS. Trafton had a brain tumor removed. His grandson, Benjamin Valiant " Val" Holston, tells the following story:
"Trafton killed a 21 foot alligator that ate the family dog. He took the Hyde to New Orleans to sell. He then bought alligator shoes and purses for his wife Lena and daughters Dot & Mary Belle. He later killed 19' Alligator and showed me (Val) their skull. They had 20 acres and a home next to the swamp near Picayune, MS. Mom (Mary Belle) would walk across the branch on a catwalk that Trafton had built. She would find Sundews and Venus flytraps on the other side. We lived there for a year. I remember finding the Venus flytraps. They had a lot of blueberry bushes growing there."

Mrs. Amacker was a member of First United Pentecostal Church of Poplarville and a retired nursing assistant and homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Argel Amacker; two sons, Joe Bob and Freddie Paul Amacker; and a daughter, Janice Amacker. Survivors include four daughters, Joyce Talley of Jackson, Joann Tally of Bush, La., Linda Whitten, and Lois Farmer, both of Poplarville; two sons, Jerry Amacker, and Lionel Amacker, both of Poplarville; 18 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at First United Pentecostal Church in Poplarville. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. White Funeral Home in Poplarville is in charge of arrangements.

MAE MAXINE'S STORY: This story was written by Randa Gay Talley, daughter of Joyce Nell Amacker
I just wanted to share the story from Granny, Mae Maxine Peters, on a visit as I passed through town once, going to an interview for an airline. She told me of when Mama Alice told her she wasn't 'really' her mother. Granny was still little...about 9 then. She told her Olga was really her mother and Granny said she ran out of the house refusing to believe it... having been so shaken by it, they never mentioned it again! AT all...for her entire life, until Granny decided to share it to her grown grandchildren...but I think only Mama's (Joyce Nell Amacker Talley) kids were told.

She also told me that Mama Alice forbade contact with Bilbo? (Who we are pretty sure is the scoundrel)... but she found a whole stack of cards hidden under the seat of a car someone had in the family. It was letters and postcards and all the postcards had a clock on them...that must've been a secret message between them. Mama Alice burned them all. What I wouldn't do to have those cards!! ..But as a Mother, the pain she was put through by her child, I am sure I would have done the very same and not thought one second about historical anything! This story makes for a very good part in a book I hope to write one day :)

Granny also told me once they (or either this was Olga & her siblings' story, I've since forgotten this major detail, sadly)...but were left at home while the adults went into town on horse & buggy. A sweet lady came to babysit them. As this kind stranger took care of them for the best part of the day, the parents returned. As they came to the house, the lady was seen to be looking toward heaven and simply vanished & they could not find her. Sweet story and granny told it with precise, sincere truth in her voice...as matter of fact and nothing less.

Granny told me that as Olga was a teenager, she became quite a Preacher at some of the tent meetings and brush arbor gatherings. I about fell off my chair to learn that, but it was something that I could tell made Granny very proud, but felt she'd definitely walked away from a tremendous call on her life as a minister. If I'd not heard Granny tell me this, I'd not believe it. "Aunt" Olga was very different than Granny, in regard to being a devoted & vocal Christian. I hear myself sometimes mimic Granny as she ends things she was doing with a reverential "Jesus, Jesus".

Granny had severe osteoporosis in her aging years, but the women of Poplarville must've known who my grandmother was, as a lady of God. Granny told me she'd met one of the ladies from the Baptist Church while working at the hospital as a nurse's aide. This lady was in charge of the women's bible study. She asked Granny to come speak after having spoken with Granny to realize she held deep faith in God. I was very surprised to hear Granny would do this! She told me how she shared with them how God healed her and they all cried as she told her story...how God healed her of pain in her legs that hurt so badly & she had heard the Lord tell her to open His Word, lay it on her legs and she'd be healed. Granny said it was a total miraculous deliverance from pain. As Granny ended up in a nursing home in the end, the doctors x-rayed her legs and marveled at how it could even be possible for her to have walked, the bones were so porous.

She left us a very rich legacy of faith & we are very thankful to have come from such a spiritual legacy!!

His daughter Ruby Nell said that her dad had a stroke and was taken to the VA Hospital in Biloxi, MS where lingered for about a year. He had retired from Love Motor Company Chevy dealership in Poplarville, MS., He was their chief automobile mechanic. He also got his brother, Raymer Phelps Peters, a job there as an auto mechanic. He suffered from high blood pressure, but didn't take any medicine for that condition.. After he retired he ran a Pure Oil Gas Station.

His obit says he died in Jamestown, TN. The only Jamestown, TN, I could find was in Fentress County. ***This is near Burrville, TN. He might have been visiting
his relatives in Burrville when he had his heart attack, but he lived in Kenton County, Kentucky. The family doctor is in Jamestown.

Grandmother (Ida Lou Williams) used to tell the story of how Ray almost died as an infant because he couldn't keep food down. My grandfather(Raymer Phelps Peters Sr) always loved to snack on cheese and crackers. While snacking one evening, Granddaddy gave Ray a tiny bit of cheese...he ate it and kept it down. Grandmother then fed him cheese every day with little bits of cracker and he thrived. Strange how you remember little stories like that! He was the FBI man, for sure. He was an avid photographer, artist, naturalist, and an engineer. (Purdue University) The painting you see above the two of them is one of his. One hangs in the FBI offices in Washington DC. Ray and Shirley had a beautiful daughter named Nora Ray who died in 1965 when she was 18. She was hit by a drunken driver. Shirley died in her sixties of a brain tumor. Doug has one son, Ryan. Uncle Ray died of Alzheimer's about five years ago. He was an avid photographer, artist, naturalist, and an engineer. One of his paintings hangs in the FBI offices in Washington DC.

We went to see him 18 months ago and I'll send pictures soon. He has been very successful...very much like his father. He's an engineer and is as meticulous as his dad. Wonderful sense of humor, too. Strange how you remember little stories like that! He was the FBI man, for sure.

Sharon states My dad is buried in the Port Hudson National Cemetery as well. Mother plans to be buried alongside Dad, although she will be cremated. Orice died a tragic death.
Alcoholism claimed him and his wife. Their only child, Shannon, was born when I was in high school and died when he was ten days old. They never recovered from it.

Sharon Alexander Bond provided the following :Donald Terry Peters (as seen in the picture of the entire family):
He never married, and after college and the air force, he lived in Puerto Rico for many years as a teacher on the naval base there at Roosevelt Roads.

Two nephews were named after him: Annette's son Donald Phelps and Richard's son Donald Reginald. When Uncle Don died in his fifties, he left all his worldly goods
to Richard's son Don, stipulating that if Don preceded him in death, then Annette's son Don was to inherit ( a good sum of money and land in Puerto Rico and Louisiana).
His reason as stated in the will was that a person would like for his name to live on. If both had preceded him in death, the inheritance would have gone to Southeastern
Louisiana University for scholarships for students from Washington Parish named Don! At any rate, Richard's son Don was underage when he inherited everything.

....Betty is buried in Baker, LA beside her husband James Starns who preceded her in death by 17 years. Betty married him when she was only fifteen....Mother made her wedding gown and those of the bridesmaids as well as their headpieces. I was eight years old when Betty married Jimmy in the First Baptist Church in Franklinton. She was always a favorite aunt of mine and was a great beauty. She was a tiny woman who was about the sweetest girl on the planet. Life was not good to her. Janice probably has that wedding album. Jimmy's family owned the Starns' Drug Store in Bogalusa. His mother was extremely cruel to Betty....often saying mean things that made Betty cry. Mrs. Starns was a very snobby woman. I knew her when I was in high school and swore to myself that I would never be cruel or mean to any daughter-in-law of mine. When Jimmy passed away, the Starns family had nothing more to do with Betty. The children of Betty and Jimmy are all very sweet natured, but I have not seen them in about fifteen years. I did not attend her funeral, but Mom did.

Sharon Bond furnished the following information on March 12, 2010" Annette is the youngest daughter of Raymer and Ida Lou Williams Peters. Her full name is Justine Annette Peters Lancaster Wallace. She was a nurse anesthetist for many years, has three sons and five grandchildren, but she is in the final stages of Alzheimer's right now. She lives in an assisted living home here in Carriere. Annette is closer to my age than to Mom's, so we have been more like sisters than an aunt and niece!

Raymer's daughter was named Justine Annette Peters. . She is mother's (Shirley Ardell Peters) youngest sister and is suffering from Alzheimer's. She is only 73. I sent you a picture of her with her mother and dad at her wedding. She married first Dr. Leo Lamar Lancaster, an oral surgeon. They had three sons...David Lamar Lancaster, Donald Phelps Lancaster, and Douglas Dunn Lancaster. They were divorced after about ten years of marriage. She went to anesthesia school and became a nurse anesthetist. She then moved to Franklinton, Louisiana, and worked in the hospital there for many years. She met and married Nathan Wallace, a dairy farmer. So, her full name would be Justine Annette Peters Lancaster Wallace, but she is known as Annette P. Wallace on tax forms and such. Nathan has been a wonderful husband to her and a great father to the three boys. Their home is just around the block from ours since they retired here as well. She was born in Poplarville.

Memorial Services will be held Thursday, July 15th from 5-7 p.m. at Crain Funeral Home in Franklinton, Louisiana.
Annette was born in Poplarville, MS and moved to Carriere from Franklinton, Louisiana fifteen years ago. She worked as a Nurse Anesthetist
at Lakeside Hospital in New Orleans, LA; and was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Nathan

Three children, a wife, and business to run kept me busy for the longest. I was in a very bad accident in 2001 when I was run over by another boat. This resulted in life threatening injuries. 1. what were the final arrangements for your mother? It was put on facebook that there was going to be a Memorial service for mom on May 15th,2012 at Unity Baptist Church in Georgetown, Ms. Of which took place. Does she have a headstone?My sister and I picked one out ordered it online and it is on its way there now. At the time we had a temporary cross to place at her grave.. She had asked me the last time we talked about where she wanted to put her ashes she told me by my dad.

Cyndi's response to Paul:I miss my talks with Mary Belle very much. Mom mentioned you called several times when I came to see her and I believe she looked forward to talking to you too Paul. Yes that was a very sweet present Val gave to mom. She loved to keep in contact with everyone. I tried to see her at least 3 times a week but called her the days I couldn't go. She was satisfied when I called her just as long as she could hear from one of us. Towards the end she wasn't remembering much at all though. She would confuse my daughter with me. I miss her too but know she is safe with the Lord.
Also Happy Memorial Day to you and I really appreciate all the service men and women who have put their lives on the line for our freedom. Living outside my beloved country for 25 years helps one to see this country even with its problems is blessed.

Some information about my Dad. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved the outdoors and loved people. He loved animals as well. He had a few horses from time to time.
He had his private pilot license when he was younger. He was married and divorced twice. My mom was his first wife. He did not have any children with his second wife. He lived with us when he became ill with Alzheimer. He fought a great battle for about 7 years. He is now in an Alzheimer facility in Hattiesburg Mississippi in the latter stage..

Yes, we had a good visit with Bud. When we came in you could tell he was trying to place who we were. He kept looking at me and looking at Dad (Wayne) and I didn't think he really made the connection - until we went to leave. He had a lot of trouble trying to form sentences but we talked with him anyway, and as we were leaving Dad leaned down close to him, with his hand on his shoulder, and said: I love you. Bud looked up at him and said: "I love you too." I guess it just goes to show that love never fades. Best Wishes! Deb.

Randa Talley Saddest story I've ever heard.. Granny(Maxine Amacker) told me that he saw angels coming to get him as he breathed his last breath.
My mama(Joyce Nell) was about 14 & he was 8 when he was burned from pouring Kerosene on a fire. He ran and she nor Mama Susie (Amacker) couldn't catch him until he reached the road from the house. He lived 5 painful years from burns that never healed. He was making a fire for his grandmother in a fireplace.
