909 Daniel boone Carter was born on Feb 2, 1897 in Monroe, TN. His father, Thomas Carter, was fifty three and his mother, Almeda Breeden, was 39. He had two brothers and seven sisters. He married Ida Nella Stout on Sept. 10, 1921 (by Rev S.T. Willocks -per Wanda Phelps). They had four sons and five daughters. Their first daughter, Gladys, died while an infant. In the 1920's he was an iceman delivering ice by wagon pulled by a horse. Also over the years he had vaious jobs. In 1946 he worked at the atomic energy plant in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and later at ALCOA. Most of all, and later in life, he was a farmer. (per Wanda Carter, 6/2002). One of Daniel's sons is Ralph Eugene Carter who is a yDNA match with Guy Carter.
Daniel and Ida's youngest child and daughter is Wanda Helen Carter. Wanda is married to Thomas A Phelps, one of the families amateur genealogists and owner of this website.

CARTER, Daniel Boone Sr. (I60001)

910 Daniel Carter was born Feb 1, 1700 in Lancaster, Virginia, the son of Thomas Carter and Arabella Williamson. He married Elizabeth Pannell in 1722. They had a son in 1725, who they named Thomas Carter. CARTER, Daniel (I7813)

911 Daniel Richard Felps (Phelps) was born on April 20, 1839 in Blount County, Tennessee. He was one of eleven children born to Henry Felps and Rhoda Lebow Felps who were married in Claiborne County, Tennessee in 1828. Daniel Richard's ancestors were German Protestants who migrated to America in the mid-18th century, settling first in Pennsylvania and then North Carolina before coming to Tennessee. The family name is spelled differently in different periods and locations - Volpp, Fulps, Fulp, Felps, Phelps, and other. Hereafter, "Phelps", the contemporary spelling of the name in Blount County, Tennessee will be used for the purpose of this document.

Daniel Richard Phelps' father Henry, whose middle name was Valentine, died in the late 1850s leaving mother Rhoda and seven of her children still at home. As the oldest unmarried son, Daniel Richard, at age 21 or thereabouts, assumed major responsibility for the household.

When the Civil War came to East Tennessee in the early 1860s, Daniel Richard Phelps joined the Union army. As a soldier in the ranks of the Sixth Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, he saw combat at Lookout Mountain, Resaca, Kennesaw, Atlanta, Nashville, and other lesser engagements. His unit traveled over 10,000 miles by foot, rail, and steamship. He told his oldest son that he did not sleep in a bed for over two years.

When the War ended in 1865, Daniel Richard Phelps returned home and became "man of the house". Older brother William Thompson had been killed in the war. Younger brother Henry had died. The community was destitute. Sisters Martha and Eliza and younger brother Hiram continued to live on the family farm, as did mother Rhoda until her death in 1880.

On November 23, 1882, Daniel Richard Phelps married Sarah Jane Lebow. They had nine children, six of whom survived to adulthood, married, and raised families. Those who died in childhood were Mary Beaula, Susie Cleo, and Chlora Eliza.

Daniel Richard continued to work the family farm in his later years until he was disabled from war-related wounds and illness. He died on February 12, 1910 and is buried at Middlesettlements Methodist Church in Blount County, Tennessee. His beloved wife Sarah Jane died in 1927 and was buried in another part of the cemetery due to rain and flooding at the time of her funeral. Daniel Richard's grave is marked by a military headstone which reads "Felps", the name under which he served his country. Sarah Jane's headstone reads "Phelps", the name used by all of her children and many descendants.

An extensive essay entitled "The Civil War and the Phelps Family" is located in the Media section of this site.

920 Daughter of Greenberry Neil and Sarah Blevins. Surname Neil has also been spelled as Neal. Married Alexander N. Brown 14 Feb 1888 in Newton Co. MO.

Her father is thought to have died during the civil war. Ann moved to Newton Co. Missouri (from Tennessee) in Oct 1884 to live with her mother and step father. Ann would of also had children Francis and Fannie Morton with her in this journey. Their existence is known as Ann mentioned them in her 4 Mar 1886 divorce petition from George Morton. It is assumed she was pregnant with 3rd child Sarah Tennessee when she left TN, but Sarah is not mentioned in the petition. Her 4th child was Myrtle Brown, with Alexander N. Brown. She had 2 sisters, 1 of which stayed in TN and the other also moved to MO and lived near Ann and their mother.

921 David "Stiff" Costner and most of his children moved to Blount County, Tennessee 1828-1831 (evidenced by marriage of daughter Mary Ann in 1828 in Lincoln County, and Rachael in 1831 Blount County). This included a migration of other well known Lincoln families also that traveled together - Costners, Bests, Carpenters and Huffstetlers. Many of these families intermarried and remained in Blount Count.

One of David "Stiff" Costner's younger daughters married Harley B.B. Huffstetler (formerly from Lincoln County, North Carolina) in 1831 in Blount County, Tennessee. They moved back to Lincoln County, North Carolina with her father and mother about 1834 and remained until 1839 when he sold land inherited from his father and returned to Blount County, Tennessee.

Document records from family bibles of the Tennessee Costner women show that David "Stiff" Costner was born February 8, 1774, died November 28, 1840. This is also documented by correspondence by Faryl I. Fleming in her Huffstetler Book published in 1992.

925 David Sr., is believed to be the immigrant on this line from England. He and his sons fought in the Revolution and three sons are known to have received pensions. He lived in Albemarle County, Virginia before 1763; According to the pension applications of John and William they joined the army from Albemarle County, Virginia. Subsequently the family removed to Burke County, North Carolina, where they were in constant conflict with the British and Indians. Because of the heavy fighting, David decided to send his wife and daughters, along with his youngest son, Thomas to Rutherford County, North Carolina, where the children's uncle, William Grant lived. Thomas found the area a hotbed of Tory support, and became a spy for the Patriots. By 1782, the family had reassembled in the Mountain Creek area of Rutherford County. David, Sr. is found on the tax list for that year. In 1786 he bought 70 acres on the North Fork of Broad River from a Thomas Morris.

Based on Richard Fulp's family group sheet for Peter and Nancy, I have linked the above Joseph to be the son of Peter Fulp and Nancy Faire. Also the death notice date of 5-10-1888 coincides close enough with Richard's listing of 5-2-1888.

Ken and I have been married since May 3, 1997 and have been "in love" for 11 yrs altogether. We met while serving in the United States Navy in Great Lakes, IL in February 1990. We have 2 beautiful daughters, Sarah and Rebecca, and we reside in South Florida. Ken is a dedicated husband and father, and practices law at an insurance defense firm. He is an avid runner, cyclist and swimmer and currently training for a half-marathon! I am fortunate to be home with my girls as a stay at home/homeschooling mom! Before coming home full-time in June 2002, I was an elementary teacher in the public schools. I taught 1st, 3rd and 5th grades. I loved teaching itself, but my days were mostly spent dealing with a lack of respect for authority and the discipline issues that ensued. I also longed to be home with my then 3 yr old daughter,Sarah, as I have always aspired to be an at-home mom! I am very blessed to be able to live my dream!! I am also a runner (having inspired Ken after running my first 5k), and am also training to run the same half-marathon! Our family attends Christ Fellowship church and we enjoy the many friends we've gotten to know over the years in our church family

Denise Park Gordon 20101 wrote the following:Because of you and grandpa...I am such a country girl at heart!! As my passion in the kitchen has deepened through my food blogging, I realize more and more where that passion originated. Spending time in the kitchen with YOU!! I love you so much grandma...and I really hope that I get to spend more time with you this coming season down in Florida. As Leah Mae gets older (and now that the craziness of her helmet appts have subsided)....I am hoping to carve that time out. I'm glad that Sarah has been able to spend quality time with you & that she has really picked up on the crocheting. She seems really talented. She mentioned (I think) quilting...and if that is something you could teach us both I would really LOVE it!! Maybe 1 night every week or so, we could come over from 7:30-9:30 for a quilting class...it wouldn't have to be every week or always such a long period of time, but I figured we could chat and catch up too.

The more I think of it, the more I know we have in common. And you are such a wealth of information. How I wish I could spend some time up in the mountains w/ you all this summer...in the actual garden with grandpa learning. Is this really your last summer up there? Leah will be 3 1/2 next summer & the girls (12 and 8)....they would be good ages for me to visit...and we could be helpers and not wearing you all out ;)

If you get your hands on any pictures (scanned) that you can email me at some point...i am on the lookout for pics of your land/scenery in WV or shenandoah, VA or midland. Midland and WV are the two places I have SO many memories, but looking at the pics will bring back so many more. I am SO glad you all invested in our lives....things were tumultuous there while we were young, but you and grandpa were the stabilizers.....I could always sit in grandpa's lap (since my dad was out of the picture). my dad paul did the best he could, but he was not at all affectionate.

Lately as I read other food blogs and see the connections they have between family and food, I realize how little of that I had in my actual house. All my connections with food, meals, family sitting down & eating at the same time, preparing meals together...have come from you and the other families I spent time with (Comers, Rosens, etc). That is where I got any cooking experience I had. Most of my memories of home (of food) involve tv dinners, canned foods, microwaves, and fending for ourselves the majority of the time. So though I've added meals I could prepare over the year, and I have always preferred inventing them as I go along....I have really taken off these past 8 yrs that I have been home with my girls. Having all day access to my kitchen, and family to feed (that always seem to be hungry) have really given me a chance to take flight. I love it!!
I'm so glad you guys are right in my neighborhood. THANKS so much for your help with the girls. We are BLESSED to have you both so close. LOVE YOU!!! Denise
